Here is a little history so that you may get to know Mom and I. This is our story: Back in 1970 my mother and her husband spent a lot of time here in Jemez. They bought an acre lot and put a trailer on it. Two more acres beside that came up for sale and she bought them. In 1974 they purchased the Amber Motel. In downtown Jemez. Then the old bar across the street came up for sale and they bought that. They built a kitchen on to it and called it Los Ojos Saloon and Restaurant. That is where mom created the famous Jemez burger. Business was great on both sides of the street. Mom sold both business in 1983.

Mom, I and my twins went camping up on the lot in LaCueva. As we sat in front of the fire, I told mom why don't we do something with this land? So we came up with an idea to build a steak house. We picked a plan from a log company in Pagosa Springs and ordered the wood and supplies we needed. The winter was a hard one. We had to dig out of two feet of snow to lay the logs, it wasn't until we finished the roof that the snow had finally stopped falling. In 1993 we opened the LaCueva Steakhouse, business was great. But by 1995 I had had it with the help problems and I really didn't enjoy what I was doing. So that was when we decided it would become a lodge. We converted the dining area into the Country Lace. I turned moms living quarters into the Santa Fe Room. Mom had fun decorating and furnishing the rooms. After that we built the Pine Cone Cabin. This was Elk Mountain Lodge for over three years. In 1997 we decided we need some more rooms and that was when we built the Ponderosa and the Royal Aspen Room. I have thoroughly enjoyed my work here at the lodge. I look around at the lodge and I am pleased with all of the hard work that went into this place. I enjoy talking with my guests over breakfast in the morning. I also enjoy when my guests come back again. It is kind of like having relatives drop in for a visit. I hope you will come and stay a while I am sure you will enjoy your stay. I am looking forward to meeting you.
